"Failed creating Direct3D Device" Error
by Aidan     [ 25 October 2005 - 8:43 pm ]
Many people reported a problem when starting the game that the message "Failed creating Direct3D Device" appears. Version 1.72 addresses this problem, so ensure you have at least Version 1.72 installed if you see this problem. If you do have V1.72 or later installed, and still get this problem, then send the logfile that is in the Start Menu (Start Menu - Programs - Free Solitaire 3D - Logfile) to me at support@grassgames.com.

It is always a good idea to have the latest DirectX installed from microsoft:

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/directx

It is also advisable to ensure you have the latest graphics drivers for your video card installed. You can see what graphics drivers are on your system by pressing Start Menu, then selecting the following: Settings, Control Panel, System, Hardware, Device Manager, Display Adapters, (Select an adapter), Properties.

Some further suggestions for people having this problem:

. Try running in the following resolutions:
... 1) 640x480x16
... 2) 640x480x32
... 3) 800x600x16
... 4) 800x600x32
... 5) Windowed Mode

. Update your graphics drivers - see above

. Update to the latest direct x from microsoft - you can see your current version of directx by pressing Start then Run and entering "dxdiag":
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/directx

. Update your graphics card - Solitaire 3D needs a fairly decent graphics card to run the game - some older graphics cards will not be able to run the game.

All else fails, send me the log file (Start - Programs - Solitaire 3D - Logfile) to support@grassgames.com.

An extra thing to check is to make sure the video acceleration on your graphics card is set to full. To do this click the Start Menu then select the following: Settings, Control Panel, Display, Settings, Advanced, Trouble Shoot.
