Recovering old user files and preferences on Macs

The game's user files can be stored in different location depending on the version of the game you have and whether you got the game from this website or the Mac App Store.

If you cannot find your user files, they may be in one of the following locations:
  • Home -> Library -> Application Support -> Containers -> com.grassgames.game name -> Data -> Library -> Application Support -> GrassGames
  • Home -> Library -> Preferences -> GrassGames
  • Home -> Preferences -> GrassGames
  • Home -> Application Support ->GrassGames
  • Home -> Library -> Application Support -> GrassGames (Mac App Store only)
To get your old user files back, you will need to move the game's preferences folder from its old location to its new location.

This is the new location for games downloaded from the Mac App Store:
  • Home -> Library -> Application Support -> Containers -> com.grassgames.game name -> Data -> Library -> Application Support -> GrassGames
and here for the most recent version of games downloaded elsewhere:
  • Home -> Library -> Application Support -> GrassGames
You can access the Home folder from Finders "Go" menu, and the "Home -> Library" folder also the "Go" menu but you need to hold down the Option key while you are accessing the "Go" menu on Lion and later.

Once you have found both the old folder and the new one, just move the game folder you will find inside the old "GrassGames" folder to inside the new "GrassGames" folder. Note that you will overwrite any new users you have created with the old ones if you do this.

Then the next time you run the game you will find your user files and preferences as before.

For those that have created custom boards these have also moved:
Old location:
  • Home -> Documents -> Game Name -> Boards
New location:
  • A "Boards" folder inside the game's folder in new location above
And the custom card decks location has also moved:
Old location:
  • Home -> Documents -> GrassGames -> Card Decks
New location:
  • A "Card Decks" folder in the new location above

Hi, thank's for trying to help but there is no such file or folder on my MAC, not one file with GrassGames even not the Container
folder, and now?

They should be there, and you should also find the new user files you've created recently in your searching.

Note that the Home->Library folder is hidden in Lion and Mountain Lion, you have to access it using the instructions above.

Last option is to search for yourusername.usr e.g "Xiaman.usr" or whatever username you use in the game using Spotlight (the magnifying glass icon in the top right of your screen), but I have little faith really in its ability to search properly alas.

Hi, thanks also but I too do not see what you are talking about. I have 10.8.5, and my preferences folder is not hidden. There is no "containers" folder and nowhere on the computer are there any files with the names "grass games". I cannot find these preferences.

Also, I paid for my previous version now this one says "free" on it. Will it keep stats? What do I get for having paid?

Thanks for any help.

It depends on the game. I think some older versions of Solitaire 3D used containers for a while.

For GrassGames' Hearts the Free version and Full version will have different settings / users so yes you will lose all progress when you switch to the full one (however you could rename or copy the folder "GrassGames Hearts Free" to "GrassGames Hearts" in the game's preferences folder if you want to try and keep them). Also the user files from Version 1.7 will not be compatible in any event due to large internal changes. The full version at the moment has extra card decks & backs, online avatars for network play & no annoying popups, and helps slightly to pay my rent. Be aware though that the online lobbies are empty at the moment for V2 and will be until the Mac App Store new versions get released, but that won't be till Jan as Apple are not accepting new submissions until Dec 28th and then it takes a week or two to get through the review process.
