Where Is Everyone?

I was away for 4 + years due to multiple unavoidable circumstances. What happened?
It used to be 30 folks in the lobby and around 10 during odd hours.
Now, it's like 3 people? Gotta wait around 15 minutes for a game.
Is it because of different rating systems? What's so bad about it, I'm totally out of the loop?
Maybe, the new subscription-based thingy?
