Some Help for Spins ?

I can't seem to be able to put spin on the ball - any help ???
by Aidan    [ 17 July 2002 - 1:17 am ]
The best way to get the hang of this is to practise at the slowest game speed, so first set the game speed to "Slow" in the "Settings" menu. While you are there, ensure the "Spin Controls" are turned "On" also.
Next, go to the "Practice" screen, and setup the Robot so that it is hitting straight easy lobs to you down the middle of the table. You can do this by centering all the scrollbars you see, and ensuring that only the "Lob" is checked and the "Fast" and "Smash" are unchecked. Press the "Shot Practice" button to continue.

Now you can try some spins. As the ball is approaching line up your bat, press and release the shot button (no power for now) and move the mouse left or right before the ball hits the bat, and viola! the ball should leave your bat curling nicely to the side.

To add top- or back-spin, move the mouse down or up instead.

Later, when you get the hang of this, you'll need to be able to direct your ball and add spin at the same time. To do this, instead of pressing and releasing the mouse button above, you press the button, move the mouse for power, release the button, and move the mouse for spin - all before the ball hits the bat ! Its not easy, but its possible.

Good Luck!

I can't do a topspin power shot- please help! I've turned the spin on and i've practiced but i still can't do one.

If you can get the hang of the other spins but not top spin, then I think maybe what's happening is that you are adding topspin, but its just hard to notice. Topspin is the least noticeable of the spins due to its nature.

To see it working more, first add some more length to the shot ie. click and hold the mouse button, pull back the mouse, release the mouse button, and finally move the mouse forward. -all this to be done before the ball hits the bat! - Then you should see the ball curving with lots of topspin.

Note you can also set the default length of shots longer (or shorter) in the Controls menu.

Can anyone give me tips how to the ball. I try but i just can't do it

Is the following correct?

SIDE SPIN, tap left button, let go, move bat side to side, hit ball. TOP/BACK SPIN, tap left button, let go, move bat forward/back, hit ball. POWER, tap right button, move bat forward for more power, back for less, hit ball. SLAM, tap both buttons or third button, hit ball.

Nope, not quite.

Two things are wrong, firstly let left button is for lobs and the right button is for fast shots. Pressing both at the same time gives a smash.

Adding Power/Spin works the same no matter which button(s) you choose to press.

Basically you hold down the button to add power, and after you release the button you add spin. Tapping the button as you describe above will then just add spin, but no power, as you do not hold down the button at all.

Moving the mouse while you hold the button down adds power in different directions (up,down, left, right).
Moving the mouse after you release the button adds spin in different directions (top, back, left, right).
Ok ?

Is there a way to reverse the topspin/backspin controls so that I add topspin by moving toward the table and backspin by moving away from the table?
by Spiff    [ 30 March 2003 - 10:26 pm ]
Sorry I forgot to also add:
is there an option to turn on the shadow for the bat?
by Aidan    [ 31 March 2003 - 4:17 am ]
Nope, no options to reverse the spin controls, and none for bat shadows either.

That was the most informative piece of information you could have given, Aiden. Thanks. After reading all the internal program help files, all I came up with as far as shot selection (lobs, fast, or smash) was hitting some sort of key while holding a mouse button down. Now I see the flow and the precise programming design considerations you implemented in TTP. I am sure the game will consume many hours to some; I must defeat Pai-Tong and his gang.
